A GrAPPLING BASED COMBAT SYSTEM EMPHASISING THE USE OF JOINT LOCKS AND CHOKE HOLDS

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is most strongly differentiated from other martial arts by its greater emphasis on ground fighting. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground - where joint locks and choke holds are used to defeat the opponent.

Upholding the premise that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes. On the ground however, physical strength can be offset or enhanced by an experienced grappler who knows how to maximize force using mechanical advantage instead of pure physical strength.

HEydAn

PROFESSOR

Despite growing up on up on a diet of bad 80's ninja/action movies it wasn't until Heydan turned 20 that he decided to dedicate himself to martial arts. Having practiced a variety of martial arts over the years including Heydan now focuses his training on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Heydan has made many trips to Japan - training at AXIS Head-Quarters in Tokyo under Rickson Gracie 2nd Degree Black Belt and BJJ pioneer in Japan Takamasa Watanabe. Heydan is a Black Belt.

Trevor

BJJ INSTRUCTOR

Active in Martial Arts for many years and training in Wing Chun Kung Fu for a decade, Trevor felt he needed a tougher physical test and began training Morganti Jiu-Jitsu [where we he first met Heydan].  After some time Heydan and Trevor formed a partnership to create Axis Jiu-Jitsu New Zealand. Trevor has since gone on to receive his purple belt.

SAM

BJJ & NO-GI INSTRUCTOR

Born in England but living in New Zealand since he was 12 - Sam took up wrestling because his 'Mum said he was fat'. A wise decision given his bronze medal in the  2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Sam's wrestling background ensured a smooth transition to Jiu Jitsu and he now holds a brown belt. Sam is the head instructor of our Sockburn club.
